A good book

We picked this up at our local library and thought it looked fun. I glanced through it (as I always do before reading a new book especially at bedtime) and thought it looked gentle.
It's actually amazing. It is a modern adaptation of "Are you my mother?" by P D Eastman but goes even further than the strong relationship between mother and child by talking about adoption.
Choco is a little bird who wants a mummy. He goes off to find one. He asks various creatures if they are his mummy because of similarities in appearance eg the giraffe is yellow like Choco's body. The animals all point out they cannot be his mom my because of differences in their appearance. Eg the giraffe doesn't have wings.
Choco gives up and sits down to cry when Mother Bear finds him. She explores what really makes a mother and invites him home. There he finds that Mother Bear has already got three children - a hippo, an alligator and a pig. None of them look like Mother Bear but she is their mother.

Whether a child is adopted or whether the child just doesn't look like on of the parents, I think this book will appeal to a great deal of families. Our daughter is biological but she really enjoyed this book and it led into a good discussion on appearances making us different but connections and friendships being possible despite that.
