Pip Squeak and Wilfred

I spent a lovely hour today with a class of 4/5 year olds (my granddaughter's class). The class have been learning about the war this term and I took in some family heirlooms to show them. I talked to them about my Grandfather, William and showed them his sketch book, that he carried with him throughout the four years he served on the Somme, and his three campaign medals.

The medals were nicknamed Pip Squeak and Wilfred after three characters in a popular cartoon of the time. There is more about the medals and the nicknames here

William's job in the army was as lorry driver, delivering supplies to the front and carrying wounded from the battle lines to hospital.

The children were wonderful and knew so much about the war - they seemed most fascinated by the mud, gas and rats - which pretty much sums it up.
