Enkianthus campanulatus ‘Red Bells’
During this brief rash of warm weather, hundreds native bees are out enjoying the little flowers of our Enkianthus shrubs. We have the solid pink cultivar ‘Showy Lantern,’ and this yellow and pink version called ‘Red Bells’ as well as the less colored species. Delicate and understated, multitudes of these small bells cover our small trees. Come fall, the leaves turn orange and pinkish red. After they fall, in winter, the slender branches create a very pretty profile. In the Heath family, these plants need similar cultural conditions to Pieris or Rhododendrons.
