A is for Art

Art plays such an important part in St Ives' history that, despite other ideas such as Arches, Archive Centre and Alba, there really shouldn't be any surprise that A is for Art.
Steeped with a rich art history, St Ives has attracted artists since the end of the nineteenth century. Although fascinated by the dramatic coastlines, rough seas and the picturesque harbour, Artists were drawn to St Ives for the unique and remarkable combination of light qualities. During the twentieth century, so many artists became very well known and St Ives became the thriving artists community that is still evident today. As you wander through the narrow streets and across the Harbour, there is a plethora of art galleries - both traditional and contemporary, craft shops and working artists studios that have a huge selection of work available to view and buy.
