Dinosaur Beach

This is my favourite place on Skye. Instead of the hills and mountains most people know and want to visit, I love the wild and rugged coastal scenery. This is Staffin Bay in the north of Skye, the bit we have been coming to for many years. We climbed on the stones and played on the beach here with the children when they were young. Later, when we just had dogs with us, we stayed quite regularly, close to the Bay, and I remember walking down here with one dog or another in the early morning, so many times. A place imbued with memories. Perhaps that’s why quite an ordinary place seems quite magical.

The tide was in as we walked down today, so there was not a lot of beach and it was not possible to see the fossilised dinosaur footprints that are visible in the rock at low tide. Stone age tools have also been found close by, which is evidence of settlement over 8,000 years ago. So, I’m not the only one to like it down here!

Across the water is Staffin Island and in the distance are the rocky hills of the Quirang.

A dull day with little light, but at least at this point it wasn’t raining - it did later and it is now very windy. Never mind - 'Three Chimneys' for lunch tomorrow!
