Smoking cannon

This cannon looks as if it has just been fired..or so I thought. I'd been photographing the lovely clouds this afternoon and only when I saw this photo on my computer did I see the cloud looking like smoke from the cannon.
This is one of the cannons salvaged from the wreck of the Portuguese galleon- Sacramento, which sank off the coast here in 1647 after heavy storms damaged most of its sails and rudder. 72 survivors set out to walk some 1350 kms to a port in Mozambique from where they hoped to be transported back to Portugal.
Along the way their numbers dwindled to only 9. They met up with survivors of two other wrecks further up the coast and eventually 127 survivors made it to Lourenco Marques. Most of the 60 brass cannons have been salvaged and to this day pieces of pottery may be found in rockpools along the Sacramento trail, a poular hiking trail which stars at this cannon.
