Bobbin making, Stott Park
Sunday was dreich, so cagoules were compulsory for the Northern orienteering Championships on Gummer's How & Blakeholme. It was tough terrain, but I was reasonably clean, so ended up with an ok result. It was a long walk to and from parking and we only had time to go to Stott Park Bobbin Mill afterwards. We had been there before, when the guide was a former bobbin maker. Now he has retired, but it is no less interesting. The blip is of the bobbin being made; there is a huge amount of wood shavings produced. These were used for insulation, when the mill was in use and also burned to keep the steam engine that powered the mill working. As the weather had then improved we went to Humphrey Head; a great place with an exciting scramble above the channel to keep us amused.
