We recognize Black Vultures, Coragyps stratus, as scavengers that feed on carrion, but I've recently learned that they will also take weak, sick or unprotected young birds and mammals. So Who Knew? Although they are smaller than Turkey Vultures, they are more aggressive and will scare their larger cousins away from a carcass. Where Turkey Vultures rely on their keen sense of smell to find meals, Black Vultures depend on their sharp eyesight to do the same.
I know, I know... this is probably TMI (too much information) but it'll make for a great conversation starter at your next party;)
