Headstops

These are the headstops on the 'west' (actually northish) end of the island church. I wonder who these kings (as they appear to be) actually are? The Stuarts originated on Bute, with a steward marrying the daughter of Robert the Bruce, and that house of Scottish royalty continued right up to the 18th century uprisings so beloved of the Scottish Episcopal Church. Prince Charles is the Duke of Rothesay north of the border. Victorian Rothesay is full of 'King' and 'Stuart' streets. But which of them would it be? Or maybe, as a church, it is St Paul (that the church is named for) and St Peter, with their crowns from the Book of Revelation. The 'East' window has these two bearded characters and an ascending Jesus. Or maybe they are just a whimsy of the builders in the 1850s, caught with the fancy of gothic revival and the tracery of the window. One of these days we must try and find out!
