Klimttorte.
We visited Die Neue Galerie today. This is a gallery housed in the former home of museum co-founder, Serge Sabarsky. It is dedicated to early 20th Century German and Austrian art. The special exhibit on at the moment is on what the Nazis called "Degenerate Art". This was the work of artists whom they deemed sub-standard and not representative of the highest Teutonic values. Works of such artists were removed from museum collections, stolen from Jewish art collectors and stored away by the likes of Hitler and Goering for their personal collections. In the last few years a great treasure trove of this stolen art was discovered hidden in the Munich apartment of the son of Hildebrand Gurlitt, the Nazis' art collector. The legal battle of establishing the provenance of these treasures has just begun. Having taken in several room on two floors of the museum housing this exhibit, we repaired to Cafe Sabarsky on the ground floor, a perfect reproduction of an Austrian coffee house complete with the Viennese pastries and decor. My delicious torte is named for Gustav Klimt, one of the so-called "degenerates".
