WW1 Anniversary Assembly

Tom and his friends, Timmy and Alfred, gave an assembly to the whole school today commemorating the 100th Anniversary of World War 1. They had to research their own family's connection to the war, and perform a sketch they'd written themselves about life in the trenches.

It was moving stuff. All three boys had great great grandfathers who served: Tom's Great Grandfather Sam was in the Royal Engineers; digging trenches and keeping supplies moving up to the Front. Alfie's relative was a sharp shooter in one of the Scottish Regiments and was wounded and invalided back home. Timmy's Great Great Grandpa fought at Gallipoli (in Timmy's words, he didn't fight - he just got off the boat, made it onto the beach, survived, and ran back to the boat with two bullets in his backside.) One of the bullets hit a book which he kept in his back trouser pocket. Timmy's family still have the book, with the bullet still lodged in the pages, and he brought it to the assembly to show the school.

The boys did a great job and, importantly, they now feel a personal connection to WWI and all those men and women who gave their lives for their country.
