Letters from Cairo

First day of the weekend and a relaxing, lazy day. I didn't leave the flat till late afternoon and headed over to Zamelek for a wander round the little shops and old haunts there. Although it's good having the flat in Dokki and the space and to be able to cook etc, I do miss the Zamelek area as it was so nice to be able to walk out at night from the Flamenco Hotel just to see a bit of 'normal' daily Cairo life. Dokki doesn't have the same old-world charm or offer the attraction of an evening stroll. Anyway, Zamelek's only a 10/15 min taxi ride away.

In one shop, I came across these old letters for sale and they got me wondering. Where did they come from? Are they love letters? Letters between friends? Or family? Is it even acceptable to sell them? And is it natural to show curiosity in reading strangers' letters. I didn't ask how much they cost, but I loved how they looked and all the snippets of stories and lives in that little pile. I might have to go back to the shop! I wonder if I'd be so intrigued if I saw letters for sale in a shop in Scotland?

What I did buy was another old original film poster like the one in my blip a few days ago. And I bought some little coloured glass discs to put little night lights on or just to add little splashes of colour around the place. Oh, and a few bits and pieces to brighten up the wall on Bb's side of the bed :-) We just leave these things in the room here when we go and if anyone else uses the room, they can enjoy them too. It's a British Council rented flat, but one of my colleagues stays here most of the time but has one of the other rooms. He loves that we make it seem homely when we're here!
