Sun oak
Not quite the interesting macro shot I usually try to blip, but this massive oak tree is a blip I have been meaning to bring you for quite some time.
This spectacular tree stands on Hammerpond road which is on the east side of Horsham, meandering through St Leonards forest past the hammer ponds (Roost hole, Hawkins and Hammer pond,) through Slaugham to Staplefield. I always use this road if I am going to Haywards heath as it is much more fun to drive than the main road.
Sun oak is HUGE, it is over 5 spans in girth and is believed to date back to around 1210 - just before the Magna Carta.
I am pleased to see it looking so leafy and it is obviously still very much alive and well.
I often wonder what stories it could tell if only it had a chance......it was already 500 years old when Henry Vlll was on the throne!
I also wonder what it could tell about the life of St Leonard's forest, maybe it can shed some light on the legend of the dragon that allegedly roamed the forest's dark and mysterious depths in times gone by!
Tomorrow is my birthday, so I will try to find something special to blip.
