Siskin frenzy!
Yesterday I filled the feeders with the last of the bird food. Today I awoke to find a flock of siskins around the feeders.
They were really lively, competing for the best places, flapping their wings at their rivals and feeding both on the feeders and on the ground.
Within a couple of hours they had completely emptied the sunflower feeder and with only the peanuts left the frenzy increased. They even competed with the woodpecker which occasionally flapped wildly to drive these small irritants, 1/10 his size, away.
They were around all day and at one stage I had a photo of 17 of them on the ground and another with maybe 10 in the air. As evening drew on (and a cat walked by) they nearly all disappeared. Now, at 9:15 in the evening there is one left, steadfastly pecking away at the remaining peanuts, probably relieved that all the competition has gone.
