to Pete

To my Uncle and best friend Pete Moran (11/20/32 - 12/28/09)
He had Jocey's smile and I have his hands.

It's been a tough week for all of us.

A Tribute

We are a resilient bunch but this Christmas we've suffered what seems to be an insurmountable loss. Peter Moran aka "Uncle Pete" died unexpectedly on Dec 28th after a brief illness.

For those of you who didn't know him, Pete was Bob's uncle. He was a land surveyor by vocation. He was a grandfather and friend to our children. A man known for impatience, he patiently taught them to tie their shoes and worked on multiplication tables with them. He taught E. the principles of trigonometry. He went fishing with Z. He argued with A. and teased him incessantly. He came to piano recitals and Christmas plays, football, hockey and soccer games. He kayaked with the family. He let a 17 year old Bob put a sunroof in his truck many years ago. He could always be counted on to help when we needed it. He helped care for the kids when Dr P was sick with cancer, picking them up from school, cooking them breakfast and taking them to school and the Royal Dairy for ice cream. Pete helped us build our house, surveying the land, clearing the house site and giving advice. He regaled us with hilarious stories of his dysfunctional childhood and listened to the stories we told. He was a gadget guy and enjoyed the challenges of new electronics. He did Sudoku puzzles and played "Sets" with us. He was a good moral man, an excellent judge of character and an honest thoughtful advisor. He liked animals and enjoyed the outdoors. He had a wicked sense of humor. He loved his wife and he loved us.

Our beloved Pete is no longer with us in body. He will always be with us in spirit though, following us, advising us, laughing with us. We will see him in the sun with his hats he always wore to protect him from UV light. We will see him sitting in the chair reading the newspaper when he came to visit. We will see him carrying cats like babies, whether they liked it or not. When we drink coffee in a travel mug, we will share it with him, along with Oreo cookies (reduced fat of course). There is so much more we wanted to share with him. He will always be a part of us, forever.

So, now, we turn on the porch light and stand on the stoop and wave goodbye until the lights are gone. Rest in peace dear Pete, we love you.
