At the end of the street
At the end of this street you will see something that you don't normally find and that is a replica of a Spitfire. It was erected just recently and they have put a lot of work and effort into this memorial. During the Second World War hundreds of men travelled from all over the world to Grangemouth so that they could train to become Spitfire pilots unfortunately 71 of them died before they even got a chance to fight the enemy. It has taken 70 years for these men to be honoured with all their names from 11 countries on a wall next to the Spitfire. The local air cadets fundraised for 5 years to remember those that had died at a time when the freedom of the Scots was in doubt. RAF Grangemouth was one of the key bases, it helped to protect the Forth Bridge and Roysth Docks where many Royal Navy Ships were anchored. The 58 Operational Training Unit taught every Polish Spitfire pilot between 1941 -1943 , pilots from Czechosovakia, Holland,Belgium,Canada , USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and India were also trained here to fight in combat . This is my Monomonday challenge for paladian :):)
