Castlerigg Stone Circle

Today was a day for doing things that tourists do in the Lake District.

In all the years of visiting the Cumbrian fells and lakes there are two very obvious and easy to visit places that we have never been to, today we put that right.

We started off with this one Castlerigg Stone Circle built by Neolithic man for use as a meeting place for special celebrations (so I read) and apparently one of the first ancient sites saved and protected for the nation - This after Victorian Tourists started to chip bits off and take them home as souvenirs. It was busy and full of tourists from all around the globe - some enthralled, some visibly baffled but almost all interested in what they were looking at. Why is it here ? How old !

I got my little tripod out and went for this shot - the mountain in the background is one of the highest and probably the most famous in the area Helvellyn.

Later we climbed up the hill that everyone who visits Keswick climbs or at least thinks of climbing eventually, its called Latrigg and provided some spectacular views of Derwentwater and Keswick and the neighbouring mountains of Skiddaw and Blencathra.

On a completely different subject today is Mass Observation Diary day. Go on have a look, have your say, the people of the future want to know what you really think of the world you live or at least what you had for breakfast.
