Peatbog

This is peat being formed by the rapid growth of sphagnum moss in a water-filled ditch (where trees were once planted). The moss then decays under water, protected from the atmosphere, and forms peat. Simple really - if you can hang around for about 10,000 years.

The peat bog of the Flow Country is one of the world's largest carbon deposits. Damaged by irresponsible and uninformed tree planting, a series of research projects are underway to restore it and slow down its emission of carbon, a harmful greenhouse gas.
