Nyman's Gardens

I recently saw a programme about these gardens which I have visited often and promised myself a return journey. Today I met up with No1 son and had a delightful walk round the grounds whilst passing on some basic gardening knowledge.
Nymans was originally owned by the Messel family, Ludwig was a banker and needed a place to escape away from the chaos of the city. He had a passion for gardening (which he also passed on through the generations) but in Nymans he created a garden where he introduced dozens of new varieties of plants from all over the world and made it one of the most important gardens in England. His son became a famous plant collector, gathering exotic specimens from as far away as Chile and Tasmania.
Sadly, soon after WWII and with a huge reduction in staff, there was a fire in the house which now survives as garden ruin. It also suffered damage in the Great Storm of 1987.
Today it is one of the most delightful NT places in the area (unlike one of its neighbours who is outrageously charging for parking to NT members! That's a rant for another day but it's causing a lot of controversy down here!)
