Scottish Comma Butterfly in Fife

Comma Butterfly - Polygonia c-album

After an absence of 180 years, the first modern-day sighting of a comma in Fife was in September 2003. I saw my first Fife commas in August 2009 and again the following year in the same location.

Today I saw one in a totally different spot at the edge of woodland on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy. It would appear to be a little faded and somewhat tattered. That, together with the time of year would suggest that this is one that hibernated over-winter. I will have to keep a lookout in the same area at the end of August to see if there is a new generation.
