King George VI Bridge

A fine B-listed bridge which conveys the Great Southern Road over the River Dee between Duthie Park and Kincorth in Aberdeen, the King George VI Bridge was designed by architect Frank Mears (1880 - 1953). Lying downstream of the Bridge of Dee, it comprises an elegant four-arch reinforced concrete structure faced with rusticated granite.

It was built by local contractors W. J. Anderson Ltd. for Aberdeen Corporation. The foundation stone was laid by Lord Provost Edward W. Watt on 15th September 1938 and the bridge was opened by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900 - 2002), in the presence of King George VI, on 10th March 1941.
