Getting ready

Love going away, but hate packing, particularly all the camera gear. Lenses, filters, tripods, chargers, plug adaptors, what else? Memory cards, binoculars, ipod.........
Big tripod not going now. Lightweight travel tripod on loan. Is it substantial enough? Do I need a tripod anyway?
How about I just take a small compact camera and that's it?
