Up Pompeii

" Caecilius est in Horto". If you, like me, were subjected to learning Latin at school via the Cambridge Latin scheme you will be familiar with former Pompeii residents Caecilius, his wife Metella and son Clemens. I failed miserably at Latin at school in spite of being fascinated with the story of Pompeii depicted in the first set of books in the scheme. Finally, many years later, I got to visit Pompeii today. It didn't disappoint. The scale of the place and extent of the remains are mind blowing in themselves, but thinking about the lives of those who lived there and the terror of their demise cannot be adequately described in words.
