Reflections on Ullswater
Nearly didn't make the blip today. Fatal error occurred when Windows was doing an automatic update and crashed. Nothing on the net helped solve the error message until a posting on FaceBook brought a simple solution.
The day started well, with a 4.25 mile walk to School Knott giving some great views all along Lake Windermere. Heard a cuckoo in the distance. Some nice countryside around here.
After breakfast part 2 we headed out to the National Park Centre at Brockhole, listening to a strings duet playing a nice selection of music on the terrace before a wheelchair friendly stroll around the grounds. A great adventure playground here, including a zip wire that Doreen declined to have a go on.
We then headed up the Squeeze to Kirkstone Pass and down to the Inn on the Lake at Glenridding on Ullswater for a cream tea to celebrate Susan's birthday. A lovely early evening down by the lakeshore which resulted in today's blip. There was a hiccup in service as they brought part of the order, forgetting the rest.
The cream tea included a scone, so below is the score for this particular morsel:
Size: has to be big 2 (too little scone or too much cream)
Shape: pleasing to the eye, top, bottom and sides 3
Colour lightly browned 3
Texture that craggy bit around the side to show it has risen 3
Breaking open tears apart easily 2
Smell must make your mouth water 2
Taste and flavour:
Crunch first bite impact 2
Churn how it breaks down when chewing 3
Crumb how well it holds together when putting on cold butter 2
Initial taste the impact of the first mouthful 2
Full taste how the flavour develops with eating 2 (overpowered by too much cream)
Final score: 26/44
A pleasant journey home leading to a bottle of rose bubbly, canapés and a steak dinner. As nice a bit of steak as we've had for many a long day. A small piece of sirloin and a small piece of fillet with onions, mushrooms, peas, tomatoes and new Jersey Royal potatoes completed the meal with a piece of Mrs Latham's chocolate fudge cake to follow.
Another good day and the weather held up too. What more could you ask for?
