Until dark

At the end of our small garden is a yew hedge, untrimmed in 100 years so now a cramped row of very tall trees. Fewer years ago, I used some bricks left over from demolishing a wall to build a barbecue in the corner of the garden under the trees.

As today was eating-outside weather we excavated the barbecue from the leaves, seeds and bark that bury it each autumn and in the process we pulled out mountains of weeds, cut back overgrown branches and, using more of the heaped-up spare bricks, built a section of path.

Then we sat in the evening sun and ate, drank and chatted until it was dark.
