The Italian Chapel

Not to be missed on any visit to Orkney. The Italian Chapel is a testimony to the faith & determination of a few Italian POWs who wanted a place of worship in the POW camp. Domenico Chiocchetti, an Italian artist (who was one of the POWs working on the Churchill Barriers on Scapa Flow) was the master planner. When the POWs were moved Domenico stayed behind to finish his work on the font. The Italians di not see the the finished Chapel but the Orcadians promised to look after the building and have done faithfully. Today there was a service of thanksgiving for 70 years since the men left the Island.
