El Fabulista

My friends & husband left yesterday back to Scotland & they seem to have taken the good weather with them...it has been raining most of the day so I took the opportunity to catch up with some sleep & allowed my mum to pamper me...
This photo is from a bottle of wine that we bought whilst visiting LaRioja. I was preparing it to send it when I took the photo. This wine is very special because the way it is prepared. It's one of the few in La Rioja prepared by carbonic fermentation & the grapes are stomped. This is the way the Romans used to do it. It's them taken underground to caves were is left fermenting & then maturing. They produce very little wine so this wine it's only found in LaRioja.
The other interesting fact is where the wine is produced. It's the town called La Guardia (@ La Rioja Alavesa) & it used to be a defensive post against other kingdoms so they created tunnels under the town to be able to scape & get food. Once there was the border of the Kingdom was moved & this wasn't a defensive town they started to used the caves to do wine.
And to finish...the name of the winery it means the fable writer because the building where the wine is produced belonged to the family De Samaniego & one of the Samaniegos was a very famous Spanish fable writer...& the different wines have the name of one fable, a picture related to it & in the back the fable.
And lastly and more important...the wine is tasty!!!
