Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

Galiano Island

It was a perfectly lovely morning so I took the camera out with us in our alden rowing boat and snapped a few pictures of nearby Galiano Island. Named after the 18th C Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcala Galiano who explored the westcoast of Canada in 1792, Galiano has long been inhabited by Coast Salish aboriginal peoples for perhaps 3000 years. (Seems short compared to much of the rest of the world!) Between Vancouver on the mainland and Vancouver Island to the west, ( it’s the closest Gulf Island to Vancouver )-- it’s 27 km long, and from a wide 6 km to a narrow 1.6 km wide. Today it has a population of about 1000. Like all Gulf Islands it’s really a big rock as you can see - the lower sandstone is full of caves and wonderful sculpted shapes. The light colored trees are the arbutus in bloom.

I think I would be pretty nervous to bring a toddler to this 2 story house....it does give you the scale and I liked the light on the rocks....it’s totally clouded up and flat this afternoon...
