Red has been the standard colour for UK post boxes from 1874, with few exceptions.

To celebrate the 2012 London Olympics, Royal Mail painted a red post box gold in the hometown of every Team GB gold medallist competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games

This is Manchester's gold post box in honour of Olympic cycling star Philip Hindes, who struck gold – and set a new world record – alongside Team GB riders including veteran gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy in the team sprint event.
