Rope marks on split bridge

I went for another stroll along the canal this morning. When I posted the split bridge last week, I mentioned that it was built that way so that the horses pulling the barges could be walked over the bridge without having to be untethered from the ropes. The marks you can see here are where the ropes have worn away at the iron uprights of the bridge over the years.
