The Cuilfail Spiral

Out for tea and cake in Lewes today. This is at the opening to the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes. (A bit of a rushed car blip as we sped round the roundabout.)

More info -

"A spiral form constructed from seven pieces of Portland Stone set on a brick plinth that forms part of the roundabout at the entrance to the tunnel.
The design is suggestive of an ammonite or snail - ammonite fossils are found in the surrounding chalk cliffs.
On the brick wall on Phoenix Causeway, opposite the sculpture, a bronze plaque:

SCULPTURE BY PETER RANDALL-PAGE
CUILFAIL SPIRAL
UNVEILED ON
3RD OCTOBER 1983
BY
J.R. LOVILL C.B.E.
CHAIRMAN - ASSOCIATION OF COUNTY COUNCILS
MEMBER - EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL

COMMISSIONED BY EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL
SOUTH EAST ARTS
MOUNTFIELD ROADSTONE LTD.

THE SPIRAL RELATES TO THE FOSSIL FORMS FOUND IN THE CHALK THROUGH WHICH THE TUNNEL PASSES."
