Scottish Fat Balls
Not a derogatory term for us North of the Border though, granted, it would achieve the desired effect.
We made our own 'fat-balls' recently for the bird-life around here. A tasty mix of oatmeal mixed with the fat squeezed out from the local butcher's square sausage* after cooking in the George Foreman grill.
It's actually quite terrifying to see the amount of pure fat that gets drained out of these things - especially when I think we used to cook them in a frying pan that already had oil/fat in it! But, along with some 'broon' sauce and sandwiched between a decent bread roll, they're hard to beat as good old fashioned comfort food - optional fried egg/tattie scone added for a proper breakfast roll. Won't be seeing these for a wee while after the past two week's over-indulgence though (unless someone brings out a half-fat, diet square sausage I suppose!)
Along with this Robin, there's a blackbird and a couple of wood pigeons having a regular peck at it, and yesterday a grey squirrel ventured up to it, but was a bit skittish and headed off fairly quickly. Lots of protein in these lean times, and will put feathers on their chest.
* for those that haven't a clue what I'm on about here, the traditional Square or Lorne Sausage is a fairly rare product outside of Scotland as far as I'm aware. Minced beef/pork with breadcrumbs and various spices shaped into a square so that it fits between two slices of bread perfectly!
