GSA Fire Disaster
From a car park in Govan the pall of smoke is clearly visible...and the stench of very old timber burning.
The fire was three hours old when this picture was taken, one can only imagine the devastation within.
The Glasgow School of Art was on a high, three students Turner nominees, the new Seona Reid Building had won a prestigious award as building of the year. Final preparations for the annual Degree Show were underway....and then tragedy.
It is said the bullet that gets you is the one you never hear. No doubt investigations will uncover the cause and answer the difficult questions about how this could happen in a highly regulated iconic public building.
While the building can be reconstructed the work of many talented students is lost forever.
Nevertheless no one has died so we should be grateful and hard lessons will have been learnt.
Next time the bullet will travel in different equally unexpected direction and get through to damage a future generation.
