Stonecrop/Lovelong
I do love April and May in the Gulf Islands for all that is in bloom...This sedum spathulifolium is brightening up the rocks all along our coastline. Sedum is also called “livelong” as they remain green long after they are picked...and,....according to my plant book, (news to me) were used to test a lover’s fidelity. On Midsummer’s Eve, young girls would pick two pieces, one representing themselves and the other their lover. Set on a slate, the length of time his piece lived and whether or not it turned toward hers indicated the strength of the fidelity. ! Stonecrop was also called “lovelong” and “midsummer’s men” for the same reason. Now you know.. :-)
We did appreciate the rain earlier today. The quiet will be gone tomorrow when the granddaughers arrive with their parents for a few days! Looking forward to more play and less work!!
