Sundial 20 Glendoick Chair
With the prospect of sun again I decided to resume last summer's series tagged sundials and visited the gardens at Glendoick near Perth.
The unique 1776 Glendoick Sundial in the walled garden is one that I was most interested in seeing. The shadow of the arms indicates the time on the stone slab chair with the shadow of the arms indicating the time. The sundial shows the times between 7am and 5 pm and in between heavy showers the sun came out very briefly but just enough to show that the time was half past 11. Unfortunately it looks as if it needs some restoration and it was not easy to read the motto.
I STAND ON EARTH AND DO NOT MOVE
YET REPRESENT HEAVENS COURTS ABOVE
HE THAT DOTH LOOK ON ME WELL MAY
REMEMBER HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY
YET LIKE A CASTEN COURTIER NONE
LOOK ON ME WHEN SUNSHINE’S GONE
