Galls
These galls are made by the sycamore leaf as a reaction to tiny mites (aceria macorhynchus) feeding on it. In May the female mite lays it's eggs in the gall and the larvae then feed on the tissues on the inside of the gall.
Amazing! I remember seeing these galls as a child but never knew what caused them.
