Perth to Kalgoorlie water pipeline was
Commissioned in 1896, the concept of C.Y. O'Connor, an engineer in the settlement of Perth on the swan River. He had the backing of the Premier, Sir John Forrest who passed a law in parliament to raise £2.5 million, a huge sum of money in those days.
However, even after construction had commenced, O'Connor faced terrible press and government criticism and sadly committed suicide in March 1902, just 12 months before the completion of the pipeline.
This pipeline today carries water to over 100,000 people in the eastern goldfields, over 530 kilometers from Mundaring Weir to Mt Charlotte reservoir in Kalgoorlie.
An amazing piece of engineering and a tribute to the two men who championed its construction!!
