Zakynthos town.

Took a taxi into Zakynthos town today, only a short ride from the hotel we're staying in.

It's the biggest town on the island and therefore the capital. It also has a large harbour where the ferries from neighbouring islands and the mainland dock.

Much of Zakynthian architecture was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake and thousands were killed in the falling rubble. The most prominent landmarks were rebuilt - albeit in reinforced concrete this time round.

The main religion is Greek Orthodox and the inside of the unassuming churches has to be seen to be believed! Brightly painted frescos and guilding as far as you can see. I'll post a link when I'm back in the UK :)
