THE BIG ADVENTURE :Day 2
Today, fellow travelers, we visit the Super Pit in Kalgoorlie/Boulder. It's proper name is the Fimiston Open Pit and it is the largest open cut gold mine in Australia!
It is absolutely ENORMOUS! The pit is oblong in shape and is about 3.5kms long, 1.5 kms wide and about 630 metres deep. It can be seen from space (apparently).
The mine is owned and operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, producing over 28 tonnes of gold per annum.
If you look large, you may be able to see tiny holes in the walls of the pit. These were the original tunnels dug by miners in the 1890s when the gold rush happened. It is amazing to think just how far underground those desperate brave miners went!! The super pit has consolidated all these individual mines into one.
Whilst looking large, you can see some tiny little trucks and dozers. These are in fact huge haulpaks, and excavators. The wheels alone on these machines are over 6 metres high! They can carry over 200tonnes., and you can buy one for a paltry $4 million!!
