Keeping the Lights On

This is the Loch Sloy Hydro-Electric Scheme on the banks of Loch Lomond.
Construction began in May 1945 and was completed in 1949.
Twenty one men lost their lives during the construction.The labour force also included some German prisoners-of-war.
It's the largest conventional Hydro-power scheme in Britain.
Water is held in Loch Sloy - two and a half miles away - and is fed through tunnels to the generating station, eventually through the four six and a half feet pipes you can see. Each has its own turbine to generate electricity.
The facility is currently operated by Scottish and Southern Energy, and is normally in standby mode, but is ready to generate electricity to meet sudden peaks in demand. It can reach full-capacity within 5 minutes from a standing start.
