this thrush is on a gate near Orange Street. Charles II chose the name as it was the birthplace of Nell Gwyn. On her death in 1687, James II agreed that each gate in the immediate area should show the image of an uncaged bird to recognise the legacy she left to the prisoners in Newgate Jail.
