That's Sid, the hissing Madagascan cockroach, that's just been handed over by my youngest to her pal in the photograph, courtesy of Andrew from Butterfly World who'd popped up as usual in the centenary garden at this year's school fair. In fact, that's his big grown-up hand in the bottom right corner placing the python carefully round pal's neck.

After the school fair it was off for some birthday-related ice skating at Murrayfield then back to ours for an Alice-themed Mad Hatter's tea party, some hide-and-seek in the park, party food and as I type there's various 10 and 11 year-olds curled up in sleeping bags in the living room watching a movie. Sleepover.
