Lunch stop
The bench by this interesting church in Cowden made a very welcome lunch stop on our 10 mile walk today. ( Mr P still practising for his long charity trek). The walk was only supposed to be 8.5 miles but we took the wrong path a few times.
Cowden straddles the Kent Water which forms the border with East Sussex and Surrey where the three counties meet. This ancient parish church dates back 700 years, is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, and has an unusual restored wooden shingle covered spire.
The spire is barely perceptibly out of perpendicular, which gave rise to the local rhyme:
Cowden church, crooked steeple,
Lying priest, deceitful people.
The vicar and some parishioners were chatting in the graveyard but we did not speak to them and cannot therefore comment on the accuracy of the rhyme.
