Staying in then going out

It was mostly dry today but I had to stay indoors, waiting for two chaps to call with quotes for some roof repairs. Late afternoon, that achieved, I went out, to walk to the village to pay a bill. At the furthest point from home it began to rain, lightly at first. I turned for home and then spied a previously unnoticed path, which seemed likely to lead home. It didn't. By now, the rain was quite heavy as I squelched home, eventually covering about twice the necessary distance.
