Strange growth

My neighbour decided to remove a rather large tree from her garden as it had gone past its "use by" date.
On a part of the trunk I located this unusual growth or could it be an insect nest.
There was much speculation and banter over the possibilities, with no real idea of its origin.
I have to say that it reminded me of a coral formation from an ocean reef.
