Danube at dusk
We spent the morning sightseeing in Timisoara (amongst the diggers and rubble) and then headed off to our second stopping point - Orsova, a town on the Danube just over the river from Serbia. This was Mr G's dad's choice of destination, and a fine one it was too. I don't think I could ever grow tired of a view like this from my hotel balcony.
The town is just along the river from a large dam across the river, the Iron Gates (Porţile de Fier), built in the sixties - the original town is now under the river level, which is a sobering thought. Apparently in Communist times, desperate people would try to swim or row across to Yugoslavia from here. Another sobering thought.
