Dream of a former Roman Bath

An exciting day: We had a walk in the woods nearby, and found there these ruins of a Roman Bath from 1930's! Most of the ruins are under water and in very bad shape, but this stony bridge-gate is still left with it's two horse-shoe-shaped stony walls.

There is a gentle history for this bridge: In early 1910's there was a sawmill, factory, near this wood. It was famous finnish sawmill, established by Sixtus Syrjänen and Otto Thuneberg called Epilän Sahanterä oy.

This Syrjänen's sawmill manufactured very fine and splendid blades from wood saws to fine surgery blades - really not only saw blades but all kind of saws and blades. But then during the economic depression in 1930 the blades did not sell very good anymore... The owner of the factory, Syrjänen, did not want to fire his empoyees, so he decided to use them to build him a house called Rauhanlinna and also a Roman Bath near the sawmill. The Bath was used by the owner and I have heard also by the employees of the sawmill. The factory later lost the competition to the forgein saws and it stopped all the activity in 1976. Only some part of the machinery of the sawmill was sold already earlier to KONE-company.

Some more shots of the bath - or actually of it's ruins...

To me this was a fine evening walk, as I had of course new that the former bath is some where in the woods, and the bath area is easy to find, but I had never before found this bridge-gate.

Lovely - even if there was maybe a million mosquitoes in the woods, all happy to meet us!!!

A warm day, +24c and great amout of humidity. Tropical weather, 2 x thunderstorms in the evening. Me Like!
