Are You a Boy? or Are You a Girl?

The Sago Palm, Cycas revoluta, is a species of gymnosperm in the family Cycadaceae and not a palm at all. They are native to southern Japan and are a very popular ornamental plant here in Florida. Since Sagos reproduce by seed they must have a female and a male plant...following me so far? Ok then...this is the 'cone' which the male Sago produces every second or third year. This 'cone' can grow over 2' long and therein the plant produces the pollen necessary to pollinate the female flower. In their native habitat pollination occurs by wind or insects, in cultivation they get a little help from human growers.

This Male Sago Palm is in a neighbor's yard. It and the Female Sago are quite spectacular. I've lived with Sago Palms my entire life and had no idea about their reproduction cycle. I love BlipPhoto...I learn new things daily!

If you would like more info on all of this check out this website... Sagos.
