Beware of the Pod

Pods are Heathrow airport's innovative, environmentally friendly individual transport system to take you from the car parks to Terminal 5.

When the Queen opened T5, they weren't quite ready on schedule - so someone had the bright idea of posing one on the elevated track anyway, just for the look of it. The poor thing sat up there for a year or two until the system was finally operational.

Since then I've used them more times than I can remember. They're sweet, friendly little things, and keep you company by talking to you - in a voice that always reminds me of Elizabeth from The Archers - as you travel. I once got a mute one, and I have to say I found the silence unsettling and almost sinister.

(I've just realized how many psychological quirks I've revealed in that paragraph!)

In all the times I've travelled by pod, I've never noticed the warning until today. And okay, maybe this one does seem to have a slightly fierce glimmer in its eye, but I still find it hard to think we're potentially facing the Night of the Killer Pods...

I can't help wondering if someone was inspired to put the sign up by Google's recent announcement...

This is my first in-flight blip, coming to you from 36,000 feet thanks to BA's trial of on-board wifi! :)
