Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Mr. Fun sent me a text photo today to show me that the hummingbird nest on our patio is being used again. I guess that qualifies us as official "recyclers."

It was just a couple months ago that a hummingbird took up residence on our patio's hanging bells ornament. She built a nest without us even noticing; then she laid two eggs, and she sat and sat on those eggs and then there were itty bitty baby birds in that nest; they looked like ugly blobs of jello. They eventually grew and flew. We never dreamed we'd have a full nest again so soon.

We realized a few days ago that a hummingbird was again sitting in the nest. Today Mr. Fun set-up the ladder and captured this picture.

We're not sure if the first hummingbird, the builder of the nest, sold the property rights to the nest, or if it is the same hummingbird. How long do hummingbirds live? How often do they lay eggs? We don't know, but we do know that they believe in single parenting. The daddy hummingbird never sits on the eggs.

We also have a sparrow building a nest at the opposite end of the patio in clear view from our kitchen window. We have nature's nursery happening just outside our windows. This is so exciting -- except that we'll be leaving in just a week for our summer adventure and we'll miss the arrival of baby birds. So we've told our grandson, who will be living here at our house this summer, that he'll need to send us photo updates.

Good night from Southern California,
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
